Flat Feet
What is it?
Flat foot is the term used for a condition where the arch is very low, or in some instances even missing, which means that the foot is flat against the floor from the big toe down to the heel.
What causes it?
- Genetics – there can be a hereditary link which means that the condition is passed on through families
- Muscular skeletal conditions – e.g. cerebral palsy can cause flat foot
- Problems with the development of the foot – biomechanical problems and injuries can sometimes be the cause
- In adults, age, weight and hormonal changes, e.g. during pregnancy, can result in the development of flat feet
Treatment
- Orthotic inserts or supportive footwear is often all that is needed to treat this condition. This will help to alleviate any symptoms, such as pain and discomfort, and will also prevent the condition from worsening
- Children with the condition can also be given arch supports inserts for the shoe to aid correction and provide support for the foot - you should always seek assistance from a professional when diagnosing a child’s condition
