Forefoot Pain
What is it?
Forefoot pain, also known as metatarsalgia, is pain that is caused by inflammation at the front of the foot, either at the ball of the foot or the base of the big toe or smaller toes. It can feel like a burning ache or sometimes a localised pain as if there were a sharp object, like a stone, in your footwear.
What causes it?
- Bad footwear - narrow, pointed or high-heeled shoes
- Athletes may find that a sudden increase in training levels can cause the complaint
- Poor circulation to the foot - this may be due to diabetes
- High arches
- Bunions
- Arthritis
- Stiffness in the ankles
- Weight gain
Symptoms
- Inflammation of the toe joints
- Pain in the ball of the foot or the toe joints - in some instances this can become severe making walking difficult
- Stiffness in the forefoot area
- Swelling
Treatment
- Anti-inflammatory medicines can be used to relieve pain and reduce swelling
- Wear good footwear - shoes need to fit well, athletic footwear must be suitable for the sports activity, e.g. running trainers should always be worn when running
- Avoid pointed shoes and high-heels to prevent extra pressure on the forefoot
- Don't wear footwear which has a worn out sole
- Orthotic insoles can be used to alleviate symptoms
