Hydrocolloid: An introduction
A hydrocolloid is composed of materials that display fundamentally different characteristics, making it an exceptional skin contact adhesive for use in many different circumstances.
The hydrocolloid is a pressure-sensitive adhesive, where a small amount of force placing the inherently tacky product on the skin gives an immediate adhesion that builds in strength over time. Hydrocolloids are well known for their capability to absorb large amounts of fluid while maintaining a cohesive structure and adhesive bond to the skin.
They can be worn in highly humid conditions where, in fact, they benefit from absorbing a small amount of fluid either from the air or the skin. This helps some components of the adhesive to give an even stronger bond. The adhesive will also absorb large amounts of localised fluid, for instance from a blister.
This kind of elastomeric adhesive also displays excellent resistance to creep and shear, demonstrating its high viscoelastic components.
